At Jonah’s Call our vision is to join in a Gospel movement that brings flourishing
to our city as we worship God, love our neighbors, and shape culture.

What to expect when you visit.

Jonah’s Call is an Anglican church, which means we trace our spiritual heritage back through the historic Church of England. As a congregation of the Anglican Church in North America, we worship according to the traditional liturgy of the Book of Common Prayer. But we definitely have our own vibe.

PREACHING.

Each week’s sermon is anchored in the grace of God that we encounter climactically in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By helping us listen closely to the words of Holy Scripture, preaching at Jonah’s Call hopes to reveal the Living God who loves us more than we can imagine. During the sermon, children from preschool through fifth grade attend Children’s Worship and engage God’s word in age-appropriate ways, returning in time for Communion.

SACRAMENTS.

Jonah’s Call follows the ancient custom of celebrating the Lord’s Supper every Sunday. All who are baptized and worship Jesus as Lord are welcome to receive Holy Communion with us, to feast at the Lord’s Table and be nourished by his presence. At appropriate times throughout the year, we welcome new people into the family of God through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. In Baptism we celebrate the unconditional love of God welcoming us even as sinners, making us clean by the act of his cross and resurrection, and recreating us in his image.

MUSIC.

Simple, excellent music plays a crucial role in setting the tone at Jonah’s Call. We understand music in the context of worship to be not performance but a means of meditation and corporate prayer. We sing a variety of hymns, both modern and traditional, using mostly folk instruments, and we rely on the congregation to be the choir.

LOCATION.

We meet for worship at Union Project, in a beautifully repurposed church building that now serves as a multi-use space for the whole community. Union Project uses the arts to build bridges between communities, which means that we have the privilege of being surrounded by the work of gifted local artists, from stained glass windows to ceramic pottery and sculpture.

FAMILY.

We take seriously the Bible’s vision of the church as the family of God. So whether you’re just passing through or here to stay, you’re family when you come to Jonah’s Call. We’re an eclectic group—students, retirees, young professionals, families, singles, and everyone in between. Most people can tell right away that children especially have a prominent place in our life together at Jonah’s Call.

ONCE A MONTH SUNDAY MEAL.

On the last Sunday of each month, we enjoy a free potluck meal after the service. Most people love to stay and eat, laugh, catch up, and connect. Whether you remember to bring a dish to share or not, there is a seat at the table for you!

LOGISTICS.

On-street parking is available along both Stanton and Negley Avenues as well as in the Mt. Ararat Community Center parking lot immediately across the street from Union Project.

Worship normally lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes. Children’s ministry and nursery childcare are provided during the service. Dress is casual. The building is fully accessible. And the neighborhoods of Highland Park and East Liberty are wonderful parts of the city to explore.

Why are we called Jonah's Call?

In the Bible, the prophet Jonah was called to preach the good news of God’s love in the heart of a city that desperately needed to hear it. We see our mission in Pittsburgh as parallel to that ancient prophet’s—to bear clear witness to the love of God shown to us in Jesus Christ, and to watch that gracious word shape culture in creative, redemptive ways in the heart of our great city.
